The most famous place in Lockport, however, are the locks of the Canalas, after which it is named for some of its locks.
While the historic locks are closed to shipping, two modern locks lift the boat to the top of the canal, and one offers the possibility of making a short trip up through them or returning downstream through two lifting bridges and then returning to a dock. During the journey along the canals, boaters will provide detailed information about the operation of the locks and a brief tour of each lock. When the guides are not speaking, the boats play authentic channel music over loudspeakers, written largely by people who have traveled the canal and the Erie Canal.
We took the Greyhound bus to Lockport and walked from the bus station to school, then went alone to a restaurant on Main Street for lunch. We learned a lot about the Erie Canal and also had the opportunity to experience the historic journey of the five locks, which I found really clean. Seeing the huge locks close to the coast and looking down on the historic locks of the "Flight of Five" that conquered the state of New York on the Niagara Canal was a truly entertaining experience. If you or your family would like to pass through a historic double lock, you can invite them to a "Lockport L lock" or "Erie Canal Cruises" tour.
The tour started from a boat that docked briefly downstream of the locks of the Erie Canal and sailed about a half-mile east before turning around to return to the dock.
